Prada Bag and Purple Hair

Another modesty outfit, mixing patterns while maintaining a general color scheme.  Here I am at my grandmother's house, having recently returned from a Goodwill modesty shopping spree.  I found this 'vintage' Prada knapsack for only $7 or $8, in excellent condition.  I found another one online for a comprable price, but mine has a gold lining inside (instead of silver) and the straps on the other one were fifty shades of messed up.

cream and navy striped shirt : Goodwill
yellow and green flower skirt : Valley Thrift
charcoal thigh highs with blue and green argyle : Targét, perhaps?
aqua-green scarf with silver threading : some little store in Israel

Also, you may note my recently dyed purple hair.  These pictures are actually from almost a year ago, so I feel perfectly fine saying that I once again have awful bangs!

My new blue dress

Apparently I'm in to 50s things right now.  That's cool.

blue dress with white polka dots : Goodwill
light denim cutoff shorts : from jeans handed-down from a friend
tie dye leggings : cut from Hot Topic tights
pearl necklace : Bat Mitzvah gift from a friend
bee ring : Claire's
elephant right : brought back from Europe by a friend
jewel encrusted ring : hand-me-down from Ima
turquoise bracelet : hand-me-down from Ima
ripped out jeans : years ago, saved from the trash multiple times

During my weekend in Columbus this summer, I stopped at a salon and had my hair cut (for free!!).  The woman who cut my hair did some fantastic things with it--and now I can get a very cute-yet-not-intimidating curl out of it by simply using a round brush on my wet hair, twisting it around, and gently pulling down to get it out.  It dries holding a very nice ringlet.

I *heart* U!!!

Today I was disappointed to hear that the exam I had been preparing to take this morning--was postponed to tomorrow.  All that hard work...

So to cheer myself up, I decided to bust out a few things I'd been waiting for the perfect chance to wear.  Namely, the skirt, the tights, and the shoes.  Ever since I got them, I haven't had much of an opportunity to wear any of them. :/  So here goes!!

light green and white tie dye v-neck : tie dyed by yours truly at summer camp
black pleated skirt with crazy color : Goodwill
white tights with red hearts : Hot Topic
yellow faux-lace Vans : Plato's Closet
assorted jewelery & baubles : handmade by yours truly, hand-me-downs from Ima, Claire's, and your friendly neighborhood CVS

Oh, and I promise those aren't my knickers you see, those are just the booty shorts I always wear under skirts ;)

Ahoy There, Matey!

Just look at those luscious locks!  I used a sailor girl pinup hair style for this outfit.  To do this, you basically take two sections of hair from the front, twist them, and pin them back.  Then you very loosely curl what is left, so it has some shape.

Blast from the 40s

Ok so long story unedited, yesterday was the day after I took out my rollers.  Curious to try out the new wig cap I had just received in the mail, I unceremoniously threw my hair into a clip and stuffed it all into a wig cap, and my new Draco wig (pictured in an earlier post).  I had myself a mini-photoshoot, and then decided I was done with that nonsense.  Needless to say, the cute little curls you see in the previous post had suffered.  So I brushed them out, and let my bangs back down, and voilà, this is what I got.  So THAT'S how they got those luxurious, soft curls seen in all the old movies!  My hair experienced zero heat damage, zero product damage, and a somewhat uncomfortable night of sleeping on foam rollers (which really wasn't all that bad).  I highly recommend this method, and I love the results.  Although the curls do get a little tangled at the end, so be careful when brushing.

A Lil' Flair

So this is how my first encounter with foam hair rollers turned out.  I left them in for about 20 hours--not too shabby!  In addition to pulling back the bangs, I flipped the back up because it was rather awkwardly long, as you can see below...

By the by, the dress is from Goodwill.  And it's not necessary to leave rollers in for 20 hours--a few hours with product should do, or overnight with slightly damp hair (as I did).

Foamy Hair Rollers!

Thought I'd try a new look.  When I went for a walk with Ellie, the neighbors gasped in shock.  Just kidding.  I'll let you know how they work out...

A hint of Gatsby

It's party time!  Some lovely 20s tips :)  Makeup?  Bow lipstick!  Don't do the whole lip, or you won't get the pouty look.  Eyes should be smoky.  I decided against eyeliner on the upper lid, in favor of dark purple and blue eyeshadow.  Definitely do eyeliner on the bottom though!  Fill in that line between your eye and bottom eyelashes, from corner to corner.  I also do a little under the lashes on the outer edge.
As for the clothing itself--braless, ladies!  This lovely tunic dress of mine just happens to have an exceptionally low waist, so I've got that covered, especially when paired with my flowy kerchief skirt.  Since the weather today is 30s and rainy, I put a couple lace tops on underneath, which also made the cleavage less blatantly there.
Since, in the 20s, womens' hair tended to be short and simple, easy-to-do styles, while my hair is long, I came up with my own alternative.  Long, easy-to-do styles...aka messy bun!  It is exceptionally lovely if little tendrils of hair fall out :)
As for jewelery, big earrings set with rhinestones, pearls, etc. held closer to the ear (think clip-on) seemed to be popular.  Since I haven't really got any like that, I decided to just go with my awesome elephant earrings.  Necklaces should be rather like mardi-gras beads.

strawberry sparkle tunic : hand-me-down from Ima, Etsy purhcase
blue tie-dye 3/4 sleeve cardigan : hand-me-down from Ima
lace cami : W*****t
long sleeved lace blouse : eBay
brown stretch kerchief skirt : Macy's gift from Ima's cousin
panty hose : your local Walgreens/CVS
brown steam punk boots : eBay
lennon specs : Purim 2011
pearl and gold necklaces : Valley Thrift

And now, for some Gatsby men!
